Nicholas Rhodes

Founder / Creative Director, OutSnapped.com

I don't think that we plan the journeys we take through life. I certainly didn't," contemplates Nicholas Rhodes, OutSnapped's Founder, "But it's awesome how the adventures and detours we take in along the way shape us into what we become.

Nicholas grew up in the suburbs of New York, obsessed with music, in particular, electronic. He learnt magic, too, sawing his sister in half live on stage at the age of 14. Really.

When college called, he moved to study at Emerson College in Boston, figuring it'd be an ideal place to break into music. But, as it turned out, Boston's electronic scene "wasn't all that just yet..."

Back then, MySpace was on the rise. And though bands and artists could suddenly get their music distributed globally, they had an image problem: getting great quality photos of themselves online. So Nicholas started taking his camera along to document live shows. He'd shoot two or three bands every night, upload the pictures the following morning, and get paid for the privilege. 👍

Realizing that great photography could build communities around events, he co-founded a much-needed electronic music festival in Boston based on that principle. "If we could capture attention with the imagery we'd use," says Nicholas, "people would be excited and curious to come along. And hey, it ran for a decade!"

When he returned to NYC, Nicholas started work as a creative director at a print magazine while continuing his night-time side-hustle. But there was something different this time around: the bands were far less interesting than the audiences watching them.

Nicholas started taking pictures of everyone in the room, handing them each a card with details of where they'd see the shots the next day. So, rather than just two or three bands liking his work every night, he was winning an entirely new audience and building 200+ new fans each time he headed out with his camera.

He launched NickyDigital.com as a destination for the images. At its peak, 150k visitors a day were heading to the site, more traffic than the magazine Nicholas worked for, which had a team of 30. And further, the platform was generating traffic from Milan, Paris, and Tokyo. Why? “They were coming to see what the kids in NYC were doing.”

2008 saw Nicholas's career in print come to a halt. The magazine he worked for folded, leaving him to figure out how to make a living from the tools he'd been developing in the evenings. Because, while being immersed in music and photography, he'd also learned how to sell concepts, quantify KPIs for clients, and interpret data and analytics. And as venues weren't budgeting for photographers, he was instead paid a commission for everyone he brought into a club: so from there, Nicholas then started to figure out how to cut more affiliate deals from his content.

Demand snowballed. Music publicists approached him to photograph breaking artists as part of their first NYC trips. Not just to capture shows, Nicholas journaled their trips while introducing them to other influential players, with the pictures shared far and wide. He also started consulting with venues directly, running the photo marketing program for places like Webster Hall for over a decade. During that time, it became Pollstar's No.1 Ticket Sales Venue in the world.

"And that's all good," he reflects, "But, jeez, by 2015, the prospect of spending six nights a week in nightclubs - forever - really hit home."

He launched OutSnapped as a business that could scale, based on the knowledge and skills he'd acquired; about the power of community building, about KPIs and affiliate marketing, about understanding and acting upon data. All distilled into the simple equation that a Fun Experience + Consumers = Actionable Marketing Data.

"So that's where the journey brings me," Nicholas concludes, "I guess the only skill I didn’t get to use along the way was sawing people in half!”
